For many years, a number of industrial activities have released harmful contaminants into some Norwegian fjords and harbour basins. These can be both organic and inorganic pollutants, where the inorganic contaminants often consist of heavy metals such as mercury, cadmium, lead, chromium, nickel and zinc, while TBT, PAH, PCB are examples of organic pollutants.
Unfortunately, these environmental poisons move up in food chains where they accumulate and can have harmful effects. Therefore, it is important that these are stabilised so as to prevent the environmental toxins from being washed out into the water and entering the food chains. One way to do this is to cover the impure and contaminated sediments with lime products.
